Which doctor should I see?

Many patients are not sure whether a problem belongs to a bone doctor, a joint doctor or a spine specialist. A general orthopaedic consultation is a suitable first step for bone pain, joint pain, muscle pain and walking problems. At Ortho Care Clinic we assess the problem and advise on the next step, including referral where another specialist is more appropriate.

Symptoms seen in general orthopaedic practice

  • Bone pain, joint pain or muscle pain that is not explained
  • Pain while walking, standing, sitting, bending or climbing stairs
  • Difficulty walking, a limp or an unsteady gait
  • Pain in more than one joint, or joint problems that come and go
  • Stiffness in the morning and difficulty getting up from a chair

Second opinions and persistent pain

If your pain has not improved after previous treatment, a fresh assessment can review the diagnosis and the options. For a second opinion, please bring any X-rays, scans, reports and prescriptions you have. A second opinion may confirm the existing plan, suggest a different approach, or explain why no further treatment is needed.

What a consultation includes

  • A discussion of your symptoms, daily activities and medical history
  • Examination of the affected areas, including movement, strength and walking pattern
  • Review of previous investigations
  • Investigations such as X-rays or blood tests only when they are needed
  • A plan that explains the diagnosis, the options and the expected next steps

Treatment options

Most musculoskeletal problems are first managed without surgery. Options include exercise and rehabilitation, activity changes, weight management, pain-relieving medicines as prescribed, supports where suitable, and injections in selected cases. Surgery is discussed only when it is appropriate.

When to arrange an assessment

  • Pain or stiffness lasting more than a few weeks
  • Pain that is affecting sleep, work or daily activities
  • Symptoms that have not improved with previous treatment
  • Walking problems or repeated falls

PATIENT CENTRED CARE

Accurate diagnosis. Appropriate treatment. Better movement.

The right treatment depends on the cause, severity, duration and functional impact of your symptoms. Consultation helps determine whether you need conservative care, further investigation, rehabilitation or referral for additional treatment.
